About the game
Moderno is a colorful card game for 2–5 players that recreates a real artist’s creative process. Collect paint cards from the gallery, experiment with colors in your personal and shared palette, and strategically create abstract paintings. The first to complete three works becomes the winner.
The game offers several difficulty levels – start with the basic rules, then add color effects that give unique abilities to each color. How to play?
Game objective
Be the first to complete 3 abstract paintings by collecting colors from the shared and personal palette.
Setup
Each player receives 4 paint cards and 2 creativity tokens. 3 paint and 3 painting cards are laid out (gallery). Players choose one painting card each.
Possible actions (choose one per turn)
- Paint to shared palette – place a paint card, receive 1 creativity token, and draw a new card.
- Paint to personal palette – place a paint card (up to 3 cards).
- Exchange between palettes – place a card on the shared palette pile and take the top card from an adjacent one.
- Token usage – spend tokens (1 token = 1 paint card; 2 tokens = 1 painting card).
- Color effect – place a card on the shared palette and activate its effect.
Completing a painting
After an action, you can complete a painting card by using 3 required paint cards from your and (or) the shared palette.
Victory
The first player to complete 3 paintings wins.
For advanced players
Color effects
- Red – draw 1 paint card, discard 1 token, draw 1 painting card.
- Green – draw 2 painting cards, discard 2 painting cards.
- Black – draw 2 paint cards.
- Pink – take any card from an adjacent shared palette.
- Yellow – receive 2 creativity tokens.
- Brown – rearrange 3 top cards from an adjacent palette.
- Blue – use the covered card’s color effect.
- Cyan – discard an adjacent shared palette pile, receive 1 token.
Blocking
When a player tries to complete a painting card, the player sitting to their right can block by revealing a paint card that:
- matches one color used in the painting;
- has one more brushstroke (I → II → III → IIII → I).
The blocked player can defend with a card with one more brushstroke. The chain continues until a player can no longer respond.
Four-color expansion
- The game ends when one four-color painting card is completed.
- After completing 3 three-color paintings, draw a 4-color painting card.
- A painting card can be used as a “joker” – any color paint.
- These cards cannot be blocked.
Additional information
If a player has neither paint cards nor creativity tokens – instead of an action, they draw 1 paint card. When the paint card deck runs out – shuffle the used cards and form a new deck. Don’t know how to play? Scan the QR code in the rules booklet and watch the instruction video.
