Dixit 5: Daydreams is the fourth card expansion for the Dixit game. The author of it, Franck Dion, is an animated theater director. Some of the animated multiples he created are very similar in style to the artwork in this expansion. Inspiring color tones and surreal (far from reality) techniques provide plenty of „food“ for the imagination.

Several cards have motifs from well-known fairy tales, so they will appeal to children. The colors are not bright, they seem deliberately faded, muted, similar to photographs. As a result, it also attracts adults. As the name of the add-on suggests, the theme of the images is related to dreams. Since they, at first glance, do not seem very detailed, you will have to take a little longer and look at them more carefully.

We dream with our eyes open

The Dixit 5: Daydreams expansion is described on the official page of Libellud, the publishers of the Dixit series, with the words: “Immerse yourself in an emotion of waking dreams”. Looking at the pictures, you get the feeling that you are in a strange dream, but at the same time everything is familiar, not frightening and seems self-explanatory. Like normal things that we encounter every day. And it is precisely such days that we quietly dream at night. And we wake up full of emotions and good impressions.

The drawings are very even in their color range, you won’t find defiant colors in them. In this case, it is not the colors that are more important, but the content, which is clear, not overloaded. The longer you look at the cards, the more you will see. In this addition, much more than others, not everything immediately catches the eye. For example, not everyone would immediately notice that a fox going for a walk is about to step into a bear trap. Or that she is being attacked by an insect with wings that look like clouds. Or that the specter that grabbed the moon woman’s hair might soon drag her somewhere far away. Or that the sandcastle princess is about to be engulfed in flames (or is it large waves) behind her.

All in all, the drawings in Dixit 5: Daydreams are very beautiful, with a distinctive, unique style and many interpretation options. And that leads to an interesting game of Dixit.
